Our approach to Public Services at EFI is underpinned by a relational, systems, data-driven, and challenge-led methodology – the vision, ambition and societal focus is innovative and emergent.
We focus on supporting multi-stakeholder, systemic challenges that are by nature interdisciplinary. We convene ‘spaces’ for collaborating and co-producing effective ways to work differently, such as the ‘Prevention Hub’.
Public Services Innovation Lab
The goal of the Lab is to bring together academics, practitioners, community members and other stakeholders across the public service system. The Lab specifically explores challenge-led issues identified by those close to them. The nature of this work involves:
- Appraising opportunities and partnerships from a ‘whole system’ and long-term mind-set.
- Disrupting the silo effect, identifying gaps and brokering conversations across boundaries.
- Striving for innovation, change, and better societal outcomes.

Prevention Hub
A collaboration between EFI, Police Scotland and Public Health Scotland, the work is to embed a prevention and public health approach to policing across Scotland.
In practical terms, this means that some key staff from all three partners are located within the Edinburgh Futures Institute, creating the physical ‘hub’. The hub focus is on combining data, evidence and expertise, underpinned with an emphasis on education and learning.
The key goals include:
- Promote a systemic focus on early years prevention – changing the trajectory of young people.
- Build the capacity and capability for effective collaborative practice across the policing, health and wider system.
- Reduce inequalities by improving health and wellbeing.
