EFI funds student research through our Student Research Projects scheme. These awards aim to support our student community working on ambitious and multidisciplinary projects that can contribute to knowledge and capacity building in Data Driven Innovation across the City of Edinburgh and beyond.

We also support post-graduate students through our internal affiliation programme, which aims to promote and help researchers who would like to develop their interests in or are already working on areas close to our themes (Creative, Data Civics and Gov-tech, Financial Services and FinTech, Tourism and Festivals, Future Infrastructure, Ethics of Data and AI).  The guidelines and application forms are available on our Sharepoint here.

Student awards and projects 2022/2023

The call for student projects in the 2022/2023 academic year are now open. We are looking for looking for interdisciplinary research questions that are risky, challenge existing theoretical and methodological paradigms, and have the potential to contribute to social transformations. Guidance for applications can be found here, and the application form can be found here. The deadline for applications is 5pm on Monday 12th December 2022.

In A.Y 2021/2022, the panel agreed to support six interdisciplinary and innovative projects across all the three Colleges. The selected projects reflect EFI’s ethos with data-rich and challenge-led proposals that include co-design of the research questions and/or co-create the final outputs with external partners, including industry, the public sector and the wider community. They also relate to EFI’s key research programmes (Ethics of Data and Artificial Intelligence, Future Infrastructure, Creative, FinTech and Financial Services, Tourism and Festivals, Gov-tech and Data Civics).

  • Benedetta Catanzariti (School of Social and Political Sciences) – AI Ethics and Society Edinburgh: Building Community in the Pandemic
  • Kai Jun Eer (School of Engineering) – Privacy-preserving Digital ID to Improve Identity Verification Process
  • Idil Galip (School of Social and Political Sciences) – Knowledge Exchange and Creation within a Burgeoning Academic Field: The Meme Studies Index
  • Youngsil Lee (Design Informatics / Edinburgh College of Art) – Hidden Humans in the Loop: Unpacking Societal Challenges in the Curation of Facial Recognition Datasets
  • Auste Simkute / Aditi Surana (Edinburgh College of Art) – Can Explainability Narrow the Gap between ‘Old’ and ‘New’ Expertise to Support AI Literacy, Expertise Development and Agency of Experts
